About Me

My photo
My name is Donna Marsh and I currently work as a Registered Mental Health Nurse in a Prison working mainly with young offenders with mental health problems. I have worked with young people for the past 7 years and find this client group very interesting. With the rise of knife and gun crime in England, I have many dealings with gang members and find it fascinating to find out why young people join gangs and engage in this kind of gang activity. Due to this, I have also been involved in the making of a DVD to raise awareness of knife crime in the UK in conjunction with the prison and a local school, this has been distributed to schools and Young Offenders Institutes across the country.

A quick update....

Wow it has been a while since I have blogged! Since my last blog I have been very busy networking with those active in working with gangs in both Birmingham and London. I have spent some time with the Multi Agency Gang Unit in Birmingham to discuss what works with gangs and how best to manage the problem in Birmingham. We attempted to put together a package for this but unfortunately the funding was retracted before this could be put into place.

I then sent some time at the Youth Justice Board talking about the initiatives that are used across the country to deter young people from joining gangs. This was very interesting and I am attending a conference next week to talk about this further. Through this I have also been in contact with another 2010 Winston Churchill Fellow who completed a similar project to me and is hoping to meet me in the coming weeks to discuss his findings and to network with others who he met along his journey.

I have also since my last blog had an article published in the Nursing Standard Journal (January 26th 2011) talking about my trip. This has also been published on the Winston Churchill Memorial Trust website as well as my full report which is now complete.

I have forwarded my report to many of the contacts I met in America and and still attempting to secure employment following on from my Fellowship.
